Tips, Tricks and Warnings-How to Survive Loneliness in a New Neighborhood

Published on Saturday, 27 March 2010

Moving to a new area can be exciting-you've got a new home, new neighborhood, perhaps a new job too. Now, there are probably a lot of things you want to discover. But no matter how thrilling your adventures are, you might feel lonely if you don't have friends to share it with.
Here are useful tips, tricks and warnings to win friends in your new neighborhood:
1.     Be proactive and don't wait for people to contact you.
2.     Take a walk to the park and don't be scared to start a conversation. If you have a dog, take it with you. The park is a great place to meet a lot of dog owners as well as dog lovers.
3.     Join a club or a class relating to your interest such as sports or books. This will help you meet people that share the same interests which is a good starting point for any friendship. Classes don't have to be expensive. You can check with your local library or community college for free or low-cost classes.
4.     If you used to be a volunteer in an organization in your previous neighborhood, find out if they have a branch in your hometown.
5.     If you are transferring to a larger city, check bookstores for travel guides or books to learn about the city's cultural activities, festivals and the places to avoid.
Warnings!
1.     Keep an ICE or an ?In Case of Emergency' contact numbers handy. Or, better yet save it on your mobile phone.
2.      Be cautious but not fearful. Remember, there are a lot more good people out there than bad.
