Things that Self Storage Facilities Prohibit
Published on Saturday, 26 December 2009
Renting a self storage facility does not make you the owner of that space. The ownership and the responsibilities over it still belong to the owner. So if you will be renting a self storage unit, you should abide by the rules especially the rules of what things can and cannot be stored there.
If you are planning to store any of these items, better do not consider renting a self storage facility:
- Animals. Who on this earth will ever think to store animals in a self storage facility? There are some, though not all. Storing animals in the facility is not only cruel and irresponsible but will also threaten the animal's life.
- Ammunition and firearms. Why? First, these are explosive, which means that in case of fire, it might explode and therefore endanger the lives of many people. Second, these are theft-magnets. And third, most state laws prohibit ammunition and firearms from being kept in the storage units.
- Perishable items. The reason for prohibiting these is pretty obvious.
Other items you should never store in a self storage are hazardous waste, prohibited drugs and drug paraphernalia, and objectionable items like those producing undesirable sounds and odors.
These items and more are most likely listed on the contract. Read the self storage contract before you sign it. You don't want to regret paying for a space that in the first place you can't use because the things you are supposed to store there are not allowed.
