Small Moves Means Not Taking Everything with You

Published on Saturday, 02 January 2010
If you are moving to a small flat or house from a bigger home, one thing that you need to understand is that you cannot take all that you own with you.  For one, the space in your new home may not be able to accommodate all the furniture and accessories that you have in your home.  Even your personal effects are in question - it may not be possible for you to bring them all as well.
What should you do in case you find yourself in this situation?  Here are a few tips that can help you.
1.  List down what you own.  Make a list of every item you have in your old household and determine which of them will be useful in your new home.  For example, do you really need to bring your king-sized bed with you?  Maybe it will not fit in your new flat.
2.  Sell what you do not need.  The items that you have crossed off your list of useful things for your new home may be good enough to be sold.  You can even make some good money out of these items.  One way to sell it is by holding a garage sale.  Another is by posting them on auction sites like eBay.
3.  Give away what you cannot sell.  Some of the items that you own may not be sellable.  In that case, you should just give them away to friends and family members who can appreciate these small gifts.  You can get rid of items that you do not need for your new home and at the same time make other people happy.
You simply cannot bring everything you own with you to your new but smaller home.  Thus, keep only what you need and dispose of what you do not need.
