Packing Fragile Stuff

Published on Thursday, 17 December 2009

Extra care has to be taken whilst packing fragile stuff. Here is a step by step procedure for packing fragile items.

* Select heavy duty boxes or special dish packing boxes for packing items such as dishes and boxes that are divided into cells for packing items such as glasses and stemware.

* Before starting to pack, seal the bottom of the box with a packing tape.

* Include a layer of foam pieces or soft clothing at the bottom of the box to give the needed cushioning effect.

* Wrap the individual pieces with a wrapping paper. It is recommended to avoid newspaper as it could smudge the chinaware. Use bubble wrap for very fragile items.

* Pack smartly i.e. pack heavy weight items at the bottom of the box followed by lightweight items.

* To prevent the items from moving in the box, fill the empty space with foam pieces or air bags.

* Pack items such as light fixtures in their original boxes.

* Use special boxes for packing large sized mirrors.

* If the item is very precious, pack it separately in a box that exactly fits the item. Now, double pack all such boxes in a large cartoon.

* Do not forget to label all the boxes as fragile and indicate in the label the type of items in the box.

* Do not overload the boxes. It would be heavy to lift, increasing the chances of slipping the box whilst lifting.

In addition to taking all the above measures whilst packing fragile items, it is essential to take great care whilst loading and unloading the boxes labeled as fragile.
