Moving Your Aging Parent to a Retirement Home

Published on Saturday, 12 December 2009

Moving your aging parent to a retirement home is a difficult decision to make. So here are some strategies to help you decide firmly in moving your parent to a retirement home:

* Understand the Figures

Money always matters. Your resources will decide the range of available choices.  Most retirement communities give a handy worksheet that will help you understand all of the factors that go into your calculation.

* Figure out the Size

Determine if your Mom or Dad will be more comfortable in a bigger community with many residents, or a smaller one with intimate setting. Also figure out if whether or not your parent can get around well with smaller communities. Will a large one become frustrating for him/her? It is important for you to understand this kind of psychology as you are seeking for alternative living units.

* Know the Sights

There are communities that cater to an older crowd with more physical limitations; you will see lots of walkers and wheelchairs. Other communities have younger residents, more physically active occupants where ties and jackets are expected. You will also find that there are differences in the look from one residence to another. Some have a comfortable, at-home feeling, whilst others look like cruise ships and hotels. Others give a more clinical impression. Ask yourself if you can stand the fact of seeing your parent in a particular community. Take time to observe all of the details, most of all in public spaces.

* Observe the Sound

Notice if there is a hush when you first enter the retirement community, or if you hear a loud sound of a television. You will get the impression if the residents are socialising or participating in activities.

By following the tips above, you can be sure that the move is for your parent's best interest.
