Advice before Moving to Finland
Published on Monday, 14 December 2009

One of the most important
things when moving to another country is to know the cultural nuances of its people. The inability to follow certain cultural mannerisms would make a foreigner pariah to the local populace. On the other hand, if a foreigner conforms to the local's cultural practices, it is easier for that foreigner to integrate in the community. It is therefore important to have a background of the culture of the people of the country where
you are moving. If
you are moving to Finland, let this be a guide. The Finns are very private people who avoid public displays of affection. So if you plan to move there with a partner, avoid causing a scene with overly emotional gestures. Finns also avoid small talk and as much as possible avoid interrupting one another. Hence, do not be alarmed if a Finn you are talking to is silent most of the time. Do not also talk too much. The Finns have a particular distrust for talkative people. They are also patient and tolerant with newcomers to their country. So do not do anything insensitive to test their patience or tolerance. If you are invited to a Finnish household, make sure to give a gift to your host. Do not dress lavishly; instead be conservative with your outfit. However, if it is a business associate, do not give a gift unless it bears the logo of your company or organisation. Exchanging personal gifts between business associates is frowned upon. Moreover, punctuality is important for the Finns. Do not be late if you want to give a good impression. Lastly, men and women enjoy equal standing in Finland. Avoid chauvinistic or feminist opinions in your day-to-day conversation with the Finns. By following these advices, you can easily integrate in Finland.
